FBA Prep Cost Estimator
FBA prep cost can change quickly depending on the product, carton count, labeling requirements, packaging needs, inspection level, and how long inventory sits before it is shipped to Amazon. This FBA prep cost estimator helps Amazon sellers and e-commerce brands estimate prep cost per unit before comparing FBA prep centers or sending inventory to a warehouse.
Enter your shipment volume, product type, and required prep services to estimate total prep cost, monthly prep cost, and cost per unit. The calculator also shows which services are driving the estimate so you can compare provider quotes more clearly and spot fees that may need to be confirmed before inventory moves.

What is FBA prep cost?
FBA prep cost is what an Amazon seller pays a third-party prep center, warehouse, or fulfillment company to receive, inspect, label, package, and ship inventory to Amazon’s fulfillment network. It typically includes per-unit services like FNSKU labeling, poly bagging, and bubble wrap; per-carton charges like receiving and carton labeling; and flat fees like FBA shipment creation. Costs vary based on the product type, volume, services required, and the prep center’s pricing structure.
How much does FBA prep usually cost per unit?
FBA prep cost per unit typically ranges from $0.25 to $2.00 or more depending on the services required. FNSKU labeling alone usually runs $0.20 to $0.35 per unit. Adding poly bagging, inspection, and bundling pushes costs higher. High-touch products — fragile items, liquids, bundled sets, or expiration-dated goods — often cost more per unit than standard products. Use this estimator to build a line-by-line projection based on your specific prep requirements before requesting quotes.
FBA prep can include FNSKU labeling, barcode removal or covering, poly bagging, suffocation warning labels, bubble wrap or protective packaging, taping and sealing, bundling and kitting, sold-as-set labeling, expiration date labels, basic or detailed inspection, photo documentation, carton labeling, box content and shipment label handling, pallet receiving, carton receiving, storage before FBA shipment, FBA shipment creation and admin, and other custom prep work. Not every shipment requires every service — the cost depends on your product type and Amazon's requirements for that ASIN.
Prep cost varies because the time, materials, and complexity required differ significantly by product type. A standard hard-goods product may need only FNSKU labeling and carton handling. A liquid product typically requires poly bagging, taping, and inspection. A bundle requires kitting labor and sold-as-set labeling on top of standard prep. Fragile or glass products add protective wrap and photo documentation. Expiration-dated products require date labels and shelf-life verification. The more handling steps required, the higher the per-unit cost.
Why do FBA prep prices vary by product?
It depends on what you ask for and what Amazon requires for your specific product. FNSKU labeling is almost always included or available as an add-on. Poly bagging is required by Amazon for certain product categories — including soft goods, products that could be a suffocation risk, and items that can be damaged by moisture. Inspection is often available at basic or detailed levels. Always confirm with your prep center exactly which services are included in their base rate and which are charged separately.

Should I use an FBA prep center or have my supplier prep the products?
Supplier-side prep can reduce or eliminate per-unit prep center fees, but requires that your supplier can apply FNSKU labels correctly, meet Amazon’s packaging and labeling standards, and produce consistent results across batches. Supplier prep works well for high-volume, standardized products with straightforward requirements. FBA prep centers are better when you need inspection, quality control, flexible bundling, compliance verification, or a buffer between supplier and Amazon. Many importers use both: supplier labels, prep center inspects and handles carton and pallet prep.
What fees are easy to miss in an FBA prep quote?
The fees most commonly missed or underestimated in FBA prep quotes include: carton receiving charges (per carton, not per unit), FBA shipment creation and admin fees, storage fees if inventory sits before being shipped to Amazon, pallet receiving fees, minimum order charges, photo documentation or inspection fees quoted separately, and inbound shipping costs to the prep center. This estimator includes fields for all of these so your projection reflects the full cost picture before you request quotes.
When should I compare multiple FBA prep providers?
Compare multiple FBA prep providers when you are launching a new product and don’t have an existing prep relationship, when your current prep costs seem high relative to your unit economics, when you’re scaling volume and need a prep center with capacity and experience at your size, when your product type changes (e.g. adding a bundled SKU or a liquid), or when you’re adding AWD or 3PL storage to your supply chain and need a prep center that can handle that routing. Use the 3PL RFQ Builder to send your requirements to multiple providers at once.
Need help beyond the FBA prep cost estimator?
An FBA prep estimate is only as useful as the rates, product details, and Amazon requirements behind it. If labeling, poly bagging, inspection, storage, or carton handling costs look high, use National Freight Hub to compare FBA prep centers, 3PL warehouses, fulfillment providers, and logistics companies that can help prepare inventory before it reaches Amazon.
